How a hail claim actually moves

Denied on the first inspection is a starting point, not an answer.

Most people call us because a carrier has already said no, or because they have been told the roof is fine and they do not believe it. This is the walk we take with them.

We get on the roof first

Before anything is filed, someone climbs up and looks. Wind and hail damage is rarely obvious from the driveway. Missing or torn shingles, lifted flashing, and damage to soffit and fascia all read differently up close than they do from the ground.

We document what the adjuster has to find

The carrier tests a 10 foot by 10 foot square and counts hail bruises inside it. Depending on the insurer, somewhere between five and 15 have to be there. We photograph the field so the evidence is on record before the adjuster arrives, not argued about afterwards.

A denial is not the end of it

If the first claim comes back denied, we can request a new inspection and put the documentation in front of the carrier again. One Richmond homeowner had an initial claim refused and ended up approved for a full replacement on the second look.

The test square

Ten feet by ten feet, and a number the carrier will not tell you.

Every insurance provider sets its own bar for what counts as storm damage. The adjuster marks out a square of your roof, ten feet on each side, and counts the hail bruises inside it. The number they need to find varies from five to 15 depending on the company.

That is the whole test. It is why two houses on the same street get different answers, and why a roof can be genuinely damaged and still fail an inspection that was done quickly or in the wrong spot.

5–15

hail bruises have to be found inside that square before the job qualifies. The exact figure is set by your insurer, not by the roofer.

We photograph the field before the adjuster gets there, so the count is a matter of record. More on how we handle claims.

One claim, start to finish

I didn't think we needed a roof replacement, however after Mark De La Fuente showed us the pictures of my roof I was surprised. He and his team worked to get us approved by our insurance. Our insurance denied the initial claims request, but Mark and his team help us in repealing and gaining a new inspection that resulted in the insurance company approving the total replacement.

That is the sequence this business is built around. The first inspection came back denied. The claim was appealed, a second inspection was granted, and the carrier approved a full replacement.

A denial is a decision made on one visit. It can be looked at again.

Mark did a great job guiding us through the process and their crew completed the work very quickly!

Smart Choice Roofers did a good job replacing our roof. Alan and Tim helped us with processing the documents and did a good job scheduling the crew and following up on the work. I recommend Smart Choice Roofers for your roof.

DS

Competitively priced and went above and beyond on each job, Mark and Allan are both top notch and easy to talk with.

Gary B

Excellent job. The roof looks beautiful. Most importantly the job was done in timely manner before storms season starts

Questions

What homeowners ask us first.

Still not sure whether what you are looking at is worth a claim? Call and describe it. We answer 24 hours a day, in English or Spanish.

Read all the questions

Sometimes the answer is obvious: a hole in your roof, missing shingles, leaks, or animals living in your attic all indicate you need a new roof. Other times the signs are more subtle. If your roof is more than 12 to 15 years old, it may be time to get a replacement in order to get ahead of any damage-related repairs. Curling shingles, missing or damaged flashing, and discoloured ceilings and walls are also good indicators. Homeowners should have a roof inspection done at least once a year.

Call us. We are happy to help you work with the insurance company on your claim, and we will come out and look at the roof first so you know what you are actually dealing with before you file.

Every insurance provider has different criteria for what qualifies as storm damage. The adjuster tests a 10 foot by 10 foot square of your roof and has to find a certain number of hail bruises inside that test square for the job to qualify. The number needed varies from five to 15 depending on your insurance company.

We work it with you. We document the roof, meet the adjuster, and if the claim comes back denied we can request a re-inspection and put the evidence in front of the carrier again. One Richmond homeowner had an initial claim denied and ended up approved for a full replacement on the second inspection.

Get it looked at

Have someone climb up and tell you the truth about it.

The inspection is where every one of these claims starts. If there is nothing wrong with your roof we will say so. If there is, you will have the documentation you need before you speak to your insurer.
