Flatwork is what most people picture: driveways, patios, walkways, sidewalks and pool areas poured flat and finished on grade. Steps, stoops and decks are a different category. They carry weight and connect to the structure of the house, so they get poured and reinforced differently than a driveway does.

Why a Fort Bend slab cracks that a slab somewhere else might not
This part of Texas sits on clay heavy soil that swells when it is wet and shrinks back down when it dries out, and that movement happens under a slab whether or not anyone poured it well. A driveway or patio poured on ground that is still moving is going to show it eventually, usually as a crack running the same direction the ground shifted.
That is not a reason to skip concrete work in Richmond. It is a reason to prep the ground properly before the pour instead of after. What to expect once the pour is finished
Freshly poured concrete needs time before it can take real weight. Walking on it too soon, or parking a vehicle on a new driveway before it is ready, is the most common way a good pour gets damaged early. We will tell you plainly how long to keep vehicles and heavy furniture off a new driveway, patio or pool deck before it is ready for that kind of use.
