What comes off before anything goes back on
By the time a full tear off starts on a Richmond roof, the claim behind it has usually already been through an inspection, and sometimes a denial and a second look before that. What comes off first is the old shingles and the layer underneath them, and that is when problems that never showed up from the ground get found: soft spots in the decking where water sat under a bad flashing detail, old felt that has gone brittle instead of just aging, and a fastener pattern that shows exactly how the last crew nailed it down.

Organic shingle or glass fiber, and why the pitch matters here
Smart Choice Roofers installs both organic and glass fiber shingle, sourced from GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed, and the choice is not just a style question on a Gulf coast roof. Organic shingle uses a paper base soaked in asphalt. It has been around longer and holds up to wind well, but it takes on moisture more than a fiberglass mat does over the years, and that matters somewhere the humidity does not let up.
Glass fiber shingle uses a fiberglass mat instead of paper, so it resists that moisture pickup and carries a better fire rating, which is part of why it has become the more common choice for homes in this part of Texas. We are a CertainTeed ShingleMaster contractor, which is CertainTeed's own credential for installers who meet their training and workmanship standard, and we carry that alongside the GAF and Owens Corning lines so the shingle actually matches the house instead of whatever happens to be on the truck.
Chapter 03
The two warranties, and what each one actually covers
Every installation carries two separate warranties, and they are not the same thing. The five year labor warranty is ours. If something about the installation itself fails within five years, whether that is flashing, ventilation or the way the shingles were laid, we come back and fix it at no charge. The ten year manufacturer warranty is GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed standing behind their own shingle material for defects in the product itself, separate from anything to do with how it was put on.
That split matters because a homeowner calling about a leak needs to know which warranty applies before anyone shows up. A material defect gets handled differently than an installation issue, and we will tell you plainly which one covers what rather than let it sit ambiguous.
